About the show
Homeland is an award-winning and highly-rated American espionage and action drama television show that has been airing on the Showtime cable network in the US for five seasons now. Developed by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, the action drama was inspired by the popular Israeli drama series about the war on terror. A co-production between Fox 21 Television Studios and Keshet Broadcasting, the debut chapter of the critically acclaimed series came out in America on October 2, 2011.
Starring Claire Danes as a season and talented CIA officer suffering from a bipolar disorder, and Damian Lewis a U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper, who she believes was turned by terrorists after he had spent several years in captivity. Homeland chronicles the often dysfunctional relationships and suspicious interactions between intelligence agencies. A big part of the storyline also centers on the general war of the CIA against al-Qaeda. After the character of Lewis got killed off at the end of a third chapter, there was a lot of concern from the fans of the hit series that the show would go downhill, but that never happened. Some actually consider the latest, fifth chapter, to be the most exciting and impactful yet.
Critical response and renewal hopes
Season 5 of Homeland returned to Showtime on October 4, 2015 and is slated to air 12 one hour episodes. In a dynamic turn of events, the fifth chapter is set two years after the previous one and shows Carrie living and working in Berlin, Germany after quitting her job as at the CIA. The hit show has averaged over 1.5 million viewers last year and is on track with 1.45 million viewers this season. Beloved by critics and audiences alike, chances are high that Homeland will return with all new episodes sometime in 2016. However, Showtime has made no official announcements yet regarding a possible renewal.

UPDATED June 1, 2016: Some mixed news for the fans of the hit espionage and action drama Homeland. First of all, the sixth season, which was tentatively slated to premiere in the fall of 2016, will not, in fact, air until January 2017, as per the announcement made by Showtime CEO David Nevins. The network decided to give the creative team some room to breathe, and had delayed production of the show from the typical late spring start to the summer of 2016. In a brighter bit of news, Nevins has also informed that Showtime is very close to securing a deal with Fox 21 Television Studios regarding the renewal of Homeland for a seventh and an eighth season. Shy of officially confirming the renewal, Nevins nonetheless sounded very confident, so fans can start looking forward to the next few years with both Clare Danes and showrunner Alex Gansa, who should both be back for the upcoming seasons. Stay tuned for release dates.
