Information and plot

Doctor Thorne is a period drama television mini-series, which is an adaptation of the eponymous Anthony Trollope novel. The series is written by Julian Fellowes, produced by Hat Trick Productions, and exec produced by Fellowes along with Christopher Kelly, Mark Redhead, Harvey Weinstein and Negeen Yazdi. The series premiered on March 6, 2016 and concluded on March 20, 2016.

The series is set against a backdrop of lovely English countryside and tells the story of unrequited, and subsequently forbidden romance between young Frank Gresham and Mary Thorne, the beautiful, yet penniless niece of Dr. Thorne. The cast includes Tom Hollander, Rebecca Front, Ian McShane, Stefanie Martini, Richard McCabe and Harry Richardson.

Reviews and renewal potential

The series opened to 4.64 million viewers, with the viewership dropping to 3.52 million for the second episode. The Telegraph initially gave a largely positive review of the premiere episode, and the subsequent critical reviews also followed suit, comparing the lavish historical series to Downton Abbey. The series has a 7.2/10 IMDb score and has the hearts of the general public melting. The plot is somewhat blurry, as some reviewers have pointed out, but overall the series is praised as one that convincingly recreates the time period and the romantic involvement, is not devoid of humor and is thoroughly entertaining. There`s a good chance that this Trollope adaptation is only the beginning, and that we will see a renewal some time in the near future.
