Series background and revival

The cult television series X-Files barely needs an introduction, but we`ll do a short one just in case. The supernatural horror and action drama series originally aired from 1993 to 2002, and in 2015 Fox announced a revival. The six-episode tenth season promptly aired on January 24, 2016. Chris Carter is back as the series` creator and executive producer with James Wong, Darin Morgan and Glen Morgan back on board as writers. The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television.

All of the three main characters – Fox Mulder, Dana Scully and Walter Skinner are portrayed by returning stars – David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Mitch Pileggi respectively. As the last two seasons before the hiatus, where Duchovny and Anderson were replaced, proved, the series just wouldn`t be worth reviving without them. All of the actors were happy to come back for a short season with an open mind as to whether a further continuation is warranted.

Ratings and possibility of renewal

The ratings have been excellent for the X Files` comeback. The season premiere was seen by 16.19 million viewers and scored a 6.1 Nielsen rating in the 18-49 demo. The viewership rose to 21.4 million and 7.1 rating when DVR and online streaming services numbers were taken into account. The second episode was watched by 9.67 million viewers. The critical reception hasn`t been that rosy, but the numbers will most likely outweigh the criticism in making a decision on whether to renew the series, if ratings stay in the same ballpark. Both Duchovny and Anderson noted that they would be willing to discuss a possibility of the show being continued further on.
