Series` background and plot
Clarence, a US animated television series developed by Skyler Page, an ex-storyboard artist of the cult animated series Adventure Time, has been on the air since 2014. It is currently in its second season, which debuted on the Cartoon Network on January 18, 2016. The series is produced by Cartoon Network Studios and executive produced by Skyler Page (2014-2015), Curtis Lelash, Jennifer Pelphrey, Brian A. Miller and Rob Sorcher.
Clarence follows Clarence Wendell, a chubby and optimistic 8-year old and his best buddies Jeff and Sumo. Clarence is the spirit of the threesome, Jeff is the intellectual center and Sumo is the one to follow his instincts. Clarence`s family – his mother Mary and her boyfriend Chad – is also a part of the plot. The boys` everyday adventures offset the subject of true friendship, and evoke genuine emotions.
Reviews and chances of renewal
Critical reception of the series has been mostly positive. Clarence has been compared to Adventure Time, with the former being called a less severe version of the original. Clarence is said to have the same level of absurdity, but is more authentic and optimistic. A 6.5/10 IMDb score means mostly positive responses from the viewers, and many adult viewers praise the series for having actual substance, also noting the nostalgic true-to-life depiction of the 80s and 90s signs of the times. The series is deemed entertaining and enjoyable across different age groups and is said to be a welcome upgrade of the Cartoon Network, so we very well might see a renewal in the near future.
