Series info and outine
Santas in the Barn is a US reality competition series that premiered on truTV on December 2, 2015. It is created by Seefood TV, produced by Half Yard Productions and hosted by Jon Gabrus.
This special 4-week holiday event offers a $100 000 grand prize and a donation to a charity of his choice to the Santa who will prove that he`s worthy of the America`s Best Santa title, and exemplifies the Christmas spirit. The ten contestant Santas hail from different regions of the US and come from a variety of backgrounds. The men and women have to compete in Christmas-related activities – chimney climbing, constructing gingerbread houses, present wrapping, milk and cookie eating... up to and including delivering a Christmas gift in a laser obstacle course in a dark house without waking the baby.
Viewer reception and chances of renewal
Santas in the Barn consisted of eight one-hour parts and wrapped up, logically enough, with the competition finale on Christmas Eve. Christmas spirit is important, and there`s definitely a heart-warming quality to the series, even if it commodifies it just a bit. But it`s television, it commodifies everything, so at least if it is done in a tasteful and entertaining manner, it`s a great start. We might see more of the Santas in the Barn for the next holiday season, because it really does offer a new twist on the classic character and the familiar holiday rituals. Why not, especially at a time like ours, when everything is a reality show, and one as cheerful as this is a rare gem.
