Series` background and plot

Birds of a Feather is a British family sitcom that was originally broadcast on BBC One for ten series from 1989 to 1998. It is currently airing on ITV since its revival in 2014. The twelfth season has premiered on January 7, 2016. The series is created by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, executive produced by Jon Rolph and Steve Sheen, and produced by Retort Productions/Quirkymedia Stuff.

The series focuses on the life of two sisters, Sharon Theodopolopodous (Pauline Quirke) and Tracey Stubbs (Linda Robson), who are complete opposites. Their neighbor Dorien (Lesley Joseph) completes the trio of friends at the core of the plot. In the original BBC production the two sisters were dealing with the aftermath of their husbands serving their sentences for armed robbery, and building their lives in whatever way they could – or preferred to.

Current season and chances of renewal

After the fifteen-year hiatus that the show took, the times have changed, and the lead characters have too. The comfortingly predictable jokes and plot twists and turns leading to a happy end are, however, still there to the audience`s delight. The natural chemistry between the sister duet is strongly manifested, and is a major contributing factor to the series` success. The resuscitated comedy series opened its first post-revival series as the highest-rated comedy for ITV since Barbara in 2000. The ratings have fluctuated since that time, but have always been high enough not to doubt its renewal.
