Series info and plot

Shetland is a British criminal mystery / drama television series airing on BBC One since March 10, 2013. The current third season premiered on BBC One on January 15, 2016. The first series was a single two-part pilot, and two subsequent seasons contained 6 one-hour episodes each. Shetland is produced by ITV Studios for BBC and executive produced by Christopher Aird, Elaine Collins and Kate Bartlett.

The series is set on Shetland, an archipelago off the coast of Scotland, where Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) and Detective Constable/Detective Sergeant Alison “Tosh” MacIntosh (Alison O`Donnell) solve murders occurring in the tightly knit island community. The atmospheric drama with a classic plot, set against an astounding bleak island landscape not does not unfold particularly quickly, but part of its charm is the pace, according to some of the reviewers.

Ratings and chances of renewal

The third series premiered to a 4.8 million viewers and a 21.5% share of the audience. The numbers are quite good, but it did not quite match the success of the second series` debut that was seen by 5.2 million viewers and a 22.9% share. However, Shetland still attracted a far greater number of viewers than this time slot usually does for BBC1 (4 million and 19%). It seems that Shetland has enough charm to go on for another series, but there has been no word from BBC One on either a cancelation or a renewal of the criminal drama.
