Production info and storyline

Grace and Frankie is a US comedy/drama series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, which was originally released on May 8, 2015 exclusively on Netflix with a 13-episode first season. Grace and Frankie is a Skydance Television and Okay Goodnight production, created by veteran storytellers Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris. The series was renewed for a second season in late May 2015, followed by an announcement in December regarding another renewal for season 3. The 13-episode second season premiered on May 6, 2016.

Grace Hanson (Jane Fonda) is an uptight retired cosmetics mogul, Frankie Bergstein (Lily Tomlin) is an energetic hippi-esque art teacher. They`ve never had much of a close friendship, until their husbands, successful divorce lawyers Robert (Martin Sheen) and Sol (Sam Waterston), leave the two women in utter astonishment. The exasperated women learn that their life partners of 40 years have been having an affair behind their backs for a very long time, and have finally eloped together. The new change in their relationship status suddenly brings the ladies into a forced relationship of mutual support – both psychological and financial – as they move in together and try to navigate the next chapters of their lives.

Reviews and early renewal

Grace and Frankie is currently one of Netflix`s hit series, with superb performances by Fonda and Tomlin universally lauded for… well, basically for being all-around amazing, nuanced, funny and grounded, with a truly magical spark between the two. The series` second season, although only released yesterday, is already garnering praise for the more confident writing and the welcome changes in the relationship between Fonda`s and Tomlin`s characters. Their enmity in the first season was natural in a sense, but it also limited the depth of the emotional exploration, since there`s only so much comedic worth you can get out of tension before it starts getting repetitive. By season two Grace and Frankie have become friends, and the interplay between them, which is, indeed, the central element in the series, has become still more multifaceted and compelling. The critics are also praising the poignant series for being both humorous and heartfelt, which is not easy to achieve in a harmonious manner.

The series first received mixed critical reviews from critics, scoring just 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season garnered an 83% score, and an 8.1/10 IMDb rating, which seems a fair appraisal of viewer interest and appreciation.

The hit dramedy was renewed for a third installment even before the second one got its release date. Now that some die-hard fans of the show have already binge watched the second chapter, many are eagerly expecting the return of new episodes. As in the progression from the first to second season Grace and Frankie managed to significantly improve on what was an excellent series to begin with, the third season might take it to further amazing heights. Stay tuned, and we will be sure to keep you updated regarding the release date of Grace and Frankie season 3.
