Basic info and plot

The Lion Guard is a US animated children`s TV series based on the 1994 The Lion King movie. The series premiered with a TV movie pilot that aired on Disney Channel on November 22, 2015, and the series itself aired in its regular time slot on January 15, 2016. It`s developed and executive produced by Ford Riley and produced by Disney Television Animation and Mercury Filmworks. The first season is set to contain 24 episodes.

The adventures of Simba and Nala`s son Kion and his friends are the focal point of the series` storyline. Kion`s diverse crew has to unite and protect The Pride Lands – if Simba allows non-lions to join the Lion Guard. The well-known all-time favorite characters from both 1994 The Lion King and 1998 The Lion King: Simba`s Pride are also back – these include, among others, Simba, Nala, Kiara, Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki and Zazu.

Current season and renewal expectations

The Lion King: Return of the Roar, the TV movie that immediately preceded the series, scored fantastic ratings in November 2015. It averaged 5.358 million viewers, and became the #1 primetime kids` cable broadcast in 2015 in the kids 2-5 demo (1.4 million), and set records in several other kid demographics. Even though the television sequel is a lot less intense than the original movies, it definitely shares many positive qualities with them, such as the funny characters and a great soundtrack. It seems like a great series to renew, with the tireless lion cub discovering new things about himself, life and friendship. The latest episode was seen by a strong 1.626 million viewers. Although the reviews are positive, it`s still unclear whether the ratings will be high enough throughout the season to ensure a pick up for a second run.

Updated March 5, 2016: The spinoff of the Lion King franchise, animated series The Lion Guard, was just picked up for a second season renewal by Disney Channel. The reviews were very positive, and the final episode gathered 1.626 million viewers, which is a certainly a strong number. The decision was announced in the wake of the Disney annual upfront conference. The release date for the premiere of the second season has not yet been set, so we will continuously monitor for updates and notify you as soon as new information is available.
