Production information, plot and cast

The first original French production for Netflix, Marseille is a political drama series that has debuted worldwide on May 5, 2016. The entire eight-episode freshman season was made available on Netflix, and the French premiere is set to take place on May 12, 2016 on TF1 with the first two episodes. The show has many famous names involved in the production – creator Dan Franck is the writer of hit miniseries Carlos, executive producer and creator Florent Siri is known for his work on Bruce Willis` Hostage, and the stellar cast includes Gérard Depardieu, Benoît Magimel and Géraldine Pailhas.

Depardieu stars as Robert Taro, the washed-up, imposing, coke-snorting mayor of the great city of Marseille for twenty years. As he is preparing to end his days in the office with a grand casino project to be completed before he retires, his ambitious protege and potential successor Lucas Barres (Magimel) turns the tables on him which marks the beginning of a standoff between the two men. The story of Barres` betrayal and Taro`s bold decision to run for mayor once again unfolds against the backdrop of the intricate political relationships between union bosses, political heavyweights, drug lords and other players in the political game.

Critical reception, viewer ratings and renewal potential

The French critics were completely underwhelmed after previewing Marseille, but many dismiss the criticism as extreme and overly scornful. Although even the positively disposed reviewers admit that the series is not as delicately nuanced as it might have been, the series is still engaging and the performances and the chemistry between the leads – excellent. Marseille undoubtedly has its ample share of charm. Just a day after its release over a hundred viewers have left their ratings on IMDb, with the numbers adding up to a beefy 8.1/10 score, with Rotten Tomatoes following suit with an 83% audience rating. Whether or not the series will be renewed for another season is unknown, so we will monitor Netflix announcements and keep you informed of any relevant news.
