Series concept and info
Seven Year Switch is an Australian reality series adapted from the eponymous American series. The series premiered on March 15, 2016.
The program features four couples in the midst of endangered relationships. This season`s couples are at different stages in their relationships – one has two children, another is yet to get married, and wants to make sure that it would be the right thing for them to do. These couples are put through a sort of “social experiment”, as the show creators put it, wherein they are separated from their counterparts and matched up with a compatible opposite-sex member from another couple. The newly formed pairs are sent off to live together for fourteen days. This is where revelations of all sorts may – or may not – dawn on the separated lovers. At the end of two weeks the original couples are reunited and that`s the point when they need to make a decision on their future.
Popularity and renewal prospects
The series has become very popular, with the third episode scoring an 826,000 metro audience, with a significant gain of 66,000 over the second episode. It has also become the second most-watched program in the key 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 adult demos. The degree of controversy around the series has been extremely high, with many critics outraged at this bizarre method of approaching relationship difficulties, and rightfully noting that perhaps the couples who are ready to go on national TV for a partner swing were doomed to begin with. Whether or not that`s necessarily true is not for us to decide, but as far as the renewal predictions go – this one sounds like a keeper, at least ratings-wise, even though it certainly does not build on the best in human nature.
Latest news
UPDATED August 2, 2016: The (understandably) controversial Australian matchmaking series Seven Year Switch has been renewed for a second installment by Seven Network. But negative attention is as good as positive one, even toddlers know that when they throw a temper tantrum, so the show has been a ratings success, and its second series renewal was practically guaranteed. A similarly controversial reality series Kiss Bang Love did not, however, fare as well and was canceled, so we are wondering what that special ingredient in Seven Year Switch is. Stay tuned, and we’ll inform you of the release date when it is announced.
