About the series

Bringing up Bates is an American family reality show airing on Up TV since January 1, 2015. The current fourth season debuted on June 2, 2016. The series is executive produced by Deanie Wilcher, Bill Hayes, Matt Hightower and Kirk Streb, and produced by Figure 8 Films.

The series follows the rural Tennessee life of the Bates family – Gil and Kelly Jo, their nineteen children ranging in age from 2 to 25 years old, and one grandchild. The family is extremely conservative and devoutly Christian, with many of the older children studying in Christian colleges. As the Bates try to maintain their values and simple lifestyle, they are faced with challenges that are relatable for most people – but multiplied in their case. In the current season an announcement of a second grandchild coming is expected, and which couple is the one to deliver is the big mystery.

Current season and possibilities of renewal

The third season of Bringing up Bates hasn`t had particularly impressive viewership ratings – averaging 0.25 million viewers and a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic. These numbers are approximately on the same level as the previous season`s, where they have dipped under 0.2 million for some episodes and peaked at 0.6 million. The all-new fourth season has also premiered to similar numbers – 0.28 million viewers and a 0.1 demo rating. The current season brings a health scare for the patriarch, new babies, new relationships and career moves, tough, touching and funny moments – there`s not a boring second in this larger-than-life family. Certain controversy and legal issues involving the Christian ministry favored by Bates, along with allegations of sex abuse and inaction by the organization have been of concern, but nothing major came out of them. It is hard to predict whether or not the show will be picked up for another run, so please stay tuned for announcements.
