Summary and storyline
Poldark is a British TV drama series based on Winston Graham’s first two novels by the same name. Adapted into a script by Debbie Horsfield and directed by Edward Bazalgette and Will McGregor, the series premiered on BBC One on March 8, 2015. Not to be confused with the earlier TV series of the same name that were broadcast back in 1975. Polder series 2 was recently renewed with new episodes slated for release in 2016.
Set in the late 18th century, the storyline pivots around Ross Poldark, a war hero of the American War of Independence who returns to his hometown in Cornwall only to find that his world is in ruins. His father is dead, him home is wrecked and his beloved Elizabeth is engaged to his cousin Francis. After rescuing a young woman named Demelza from a beating, Poldark takes her as a kitchen maid in what will develop into a special relationship. Filmed on location in Cornwall, the series stars Aidan Turner as Captain Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza.
Ratings and renewal information
With just eight episodes, Poldark series 1 concluded in late Spring 2015 and in a few short weeks managed to establish a formidable fanbase. A huge hit for BBC, the show pulled in 5.9 million viewers for its final episode, boasts 8.4 out of 10 on IMDB and has a solid 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans recently welcomed the news that Poldark was renewed for series 2 scheduled to premiere sometime next year. In the U.S., the show aired on PBS as part of the 2015 PBS Masterpiece series.
