Basic info and storyline
Star Wars: Rebels is a computer-animated 3D CGI animated sci-fi and adventure series that features a time in the Galactic Empire when the last of the Jedi Knights are being hunted down by Imperial forces while a rebellion brews against the Empire. Inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy, the series was written by Simon Kinberg and produced by Lucasfilm Animation. The series originally premiered on the Disney XD channel on October 13, 2014, on the heels of a short feature film titled Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion. The third season of the show opened on September 24, 2016.
The award-nominated series is a bridge connecting the storyline of Star Wars Episode III and Episode IV movies. Star Wars: Rebels follows a rebellious group of heroes that strike out again the Imperial forces fourteen years after the fall of the Galactic Republic. Incorporating classic characters like Darth Vader and Lando Calrissian, the series also introduced new heroes and villains to the galaxy.
Ratings, current season and possible renewal
In season 3 the audience is introduced to two powerful new characters – Grand Admiral Thrawn and Bendu. Additionally, a much more important role is assigned to Sabine Wren, a rebel leader of Mandalorian descent. The one-hour season premiere special, “Steps into Shadows” portrayed a dramatic standoff between the rebels and their new nemesis Grand Admiral Thrawn, a greater and far more complicated threat than any they have fought before. Star Wars: Rebels garnered a solid audience of 0.68 million viewers in season 1 and 0.46 million for season 2, while season 3 debuted to 0.56 million viewers, staying steady in the ratings department. The show was nominated for Best Animated Series at the Annie Awards and the Critics’ Choice Television Awards. With an average score of 8/10 on IMDb and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show is a definite success, and we are expecting Disney XD to continue with it.
