Da Vinci`s Demons is a historical fantasy adventure and drama television series that was created by David S.Goyer, produced and developed in conjunction with BBC Worldwide, and premiered on Starz on April 12, 2013. Following the end of the third season production period, but several months ahead of its premiere Starz announced that the series will not be continued for a fourth season.
The series is based on historical events and draws on the legendary figure of Leonardo Da Vinci (Tom Riley), an eccentric Renaissance genius. The many-talented artist and inventor in his twenties fights his demons, invents prototypical machine guns, wins the heart of Lucrezia Donati (Laura Haddock), crosses swords with his opponents, saves Florence during a siege and engages in a number of variously far-fetched activities. Leonardo`s relationship with the Medici and Pazzi families, his involvement in the mysterious Sons of Mithras cult, being caught in the midst of Catholic Church-related intrigue and various other historically improbable events are chronicled in the series that has more of a superhero spirit than a historic feel.
Starz representatives stress that the decision to cancel Da Vinci`s Demons for the fourth season does not mean that it was deemed a failure, rather, that it was a good time to end it story-wise. There are other series that are aimed at the same demographic, with ratings just as good, but perhaps, for a more diverse audience.
