Basic info and storyline
Difficult People is a new American comedy series that revolves around two 30-something aspiring comics and best friends living and working in New York City. Currently available on the online streaming platform Hulu, the show was originally developed for the USA Network, which later decided to transition out of comedy programming. The new series is produced for Hulu by 3 Arts Entertainment, Marobru and Universal Cable Productions. Executive produced by Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation) and Dave Becky (Louie), Difficult People season 1 premiered on Hulu on August 5, 2015. The second season debuted on July 12, 2016.
The series focuses on creator Julie Klausner, who stars alongside Billy Eichner, two jaded comedians struggling to make a living in New York City. Their irreverent behavior often lands them in awkward situations, and as their friends move into successful careers and personal relationships, Julie and Billy seem to be getting more and more bitter every day.
Ratings and renewal potential
Season 1 debuted with two half-hour episodes, and subsequent episodes being released weekly, a defiant move to the typical binge-drop strategy. The two bitter comics-to-be struggle through their lives for ten more episodes in the second chapter, which is two episodes longer than the freshman season. Difficult People is well-received by the critics and enjoys high review aggregator scores – 76% on Metacritic, 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.4 on IMDb. Since Hulu does not make its viewership numbers publicly available, all we can say is that these ratings are indicative of a bright future ahead of Difficult People. Stay tuned, and we will let you know whether the network had renewed or canceled the series for a third season.
Season 2 recap
The 10-episode sophomore season of comedy series Difficult People wrapped up on September 6, 2016 on Hulu. Life is no easier than usual for Julie and Billy, and they continue to explore the intricacies of modern life in a metropolis. Julie manages to option out her personal essay to be made into a film, while Billy is unexpectedly involved in wedding preparations for Matthew. Fan-favorite jaded and annoying pair of comics have a grudge against pretty much everything they lay their eyes on, but continue to attract the audience. It is difficult to predict the future of the show, for as witty and sharp-tongued as it is, it still targets a rather narrow niche audience. The chances of renewal depend heavily on whether this audience segment is subscribed to Hulu – and certainly we hope that it is.
