Storyline and cast
Vegas Rat Rods is an American reality television series that follows the lives of Steve Darnell and his band of master automotive fabricators. The series is produced for the Discovery Channel by Proper Television, with Jim Beard serving as the executive producer. Season 1 of Vegas Rat Rods on Discovery Channel on April 17, 2014 and season 3 debuted on July 25, 2016 with ten new one-hour episodes.
Working on the outskirts of Las Vegas, Steve Darnell and his crew at Welder Up re-build one-of-a-kind Mad Max-style rat rods (a style of hot rod or custom car) that, in most cases, imitates the early hot rods of the ‘40’s, ‘50’s, and early ‘60’s). In each episode, Darnell and his band of oddballs and misfit buddies use their imagination and creativity to rebuild hidden treasures found in junkyards into unique vehicles for their quirky customers. And imagination is something that neither the crew nor their customers lack – with such details as a shotgun gearshift, mason jar tail lights, horseshoe gas pedals, and death row electric chair car seats, the cars come out to be rolling works of art capable of amazing and amusing anyone. Season 3 featured transformations of a 1955 Chevy truck and a D-Rod, as well as an installation of an alcohol-fueled engine for the first time in the history of the shop.
Viewership and potential renewal
The current season opened to an audience of one million viewers and continues to attract just under a million viewers per episode with a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo. With a 6.7/10 IMDb rating and excellent viewership numbers this series is definitely bound for a renewal. After all, when did shows about car renovations lack popularity? Especially cars like the ones the crew at Welder Up works on? Although Discovery has not yet announced its plans for another season, if all goes well, we will see Vegas Rat Rods season 4 next year.
