About the show
Gilmore Girls is an American comedy-drama television series that centers on Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory. The current eighth season is once again created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is also the writer, director and executive producer, with Dorothy Parker Drank Here Productions and Warner Bros. Television behind the series. The show originally aired on the WB (The CW for season 7) and was cancelled after its seventh season on May 15, 2007. However, in 2015 Netflix picked up the series for a limited release of four 90-minute episodes, which began streaming on November 25, 2016.
Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) is a single mother raising a teenage daughter named Rory (Alexis Bledel). The two live in a fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow that is populated by colorful and eclectic people, with the main worries of ambition, education, work and family. When Rory graduates from high school, she attends Yale University, much to the satisfaction of Lorelai’s appearance-obsessed parents.
Reception and future prospects
The series had a stable fan base, has received several award nominations and won one Emmy Award, but that did not prevent its cancelation by The CW after the seventh season. It’s possible that the decision to cancel the show was based on the fact that there was not much more to write about, since Rory was out on her own and wouldn’t be returning home for good. However, to the great delight of the grateful viewers, Netflix picked the series up for a four-episode eighth season, which starts off eight years after the seventh installment ended. Each episode represents a different season of one year, which leaves for endless possibilities. Season 8 could have ended on a completely positive satisfying note, but the surprise at the end of the season finale left many fans gasping. We`re not going to give away any spoilers, but the finale left an open-ended opportunity for more action to come in the future, although no plans to continue are in order so far.
