Summary and plot
The Last Man on Earth is an American comedy TV series that has been critically acclaimed and has received a Primetime Emmy Award for creator Will Forte’s writing and directing. The series is produced by The Si Fi Company, Lord Miller Productions and 20th Century Fox Television. Season 1 of the post-apocalyptic show premiered on Fox in March 2015, and the most recent third chapter debuted on September 25, 2016.
The Last Man on Earth follows Phil Miller (Will Forte) in the year 2020 as he finds himself the only human left on Earth after a deadly virus destroyed the rest of the planet. Phil embarks on a cross country trek in his RV in search of other survivors and just before tragically ending his life out of sheer boredom and lack of female attention, he meets the quirky Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal). Acting quick, Phil marries Carol believing that the two are humanity’s last hope in repopulating the earth, only to learn that there is another very attractive woman named Melissa (January Jones) who is alive and becomes the object of Phil’s desire. More women are introduced as the show progresses, including Gail (Mary Steenburgen), Erica (Cleopatra Coleman). Todd (Mel Rodriguez) is the only other male on the show.
Reception and renewal prospects
While the critics have been most positive in their reviews of the show, it has seen a decline in ratings. Nearly 30% fewer viewers tuned in to season two than the preceding installment — 2.96 million compared to the 4 million for the freshman season. Season 3 started off with 2.23 million viewers tuning in, which is, once again, a noticeable decline compared to the preceding season. Despite the sliding viewership, the awkward, hilarious and sweet post-apocalyptic show has received much praise for the brilliant ensemble cast, clever concept and dynamic narrative. It has garnered a number of nominations, the latest being Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Will Forte at the 2016 Emmys and Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy Series at the Critics Choice Awards. The show has not yet been renewed for a fourth season, but it is a popular one with 8.1/10 on IMDb and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the chances seem strong. Stay tuned, and we will keep you informed.
