True Detective is an American crime drama TV series written by Nic Pizzalatto and starring Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Collin Farrel, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams. Each season of the series is written as a self-contained story and stars a different cast. After receiving some of the highest ratings in history for the first season, the series was renewed for season 2, which premiered on HBO on June 21, 2015.
In season 1, the viewer follows a flashback narrative of two homicide detectives from the Louisiana State Police as they remember their pursuit of a serial killer over a period of seventeen years. As they hunt down the killer, Rust (McConaughey) and Marty (Harrelson) must deal with their own demons, as the ghosts of the past of the first come back, and the marriage of the second falls apart.
Season 2 takes place in California, where three detectives of the California Police Department investigate the murder of a corrupt city official. Conspiracy, betrayal and ethical battles created an intricate web in which the detectives might find their demise.
Although the first season was much more popular among viewers and critics than season 2, the network is not planning to stop with this year’s release. At this moment, HBO has offered Pizzalatto a three-year deal to continue the project’s production and is waiting on the writer’s decision. We should know shortly if Pizzalatto accepts the deal and if there will be True Detective Season 3 in the future.
