Series information and plot
Endeavour is a British detective drama television series running on ITV since January 2, 2012, when the pilot episode of the series was released. The third series is currently on the air, having premiered on January 3, 2016. The series is co-produced by Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece for ITV Studios and executive produced by Michelle Buck Damien and Rebecca Eaton. Each series consists of four 90-minute episodes.
The drama series is a prequel to the popular and long-running Inspector Morse series, and focuses on the early career days of Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) as he serves as a Detective Constable in Oxford. He has to deal with disillusionment as he solves the most intricate and disturbing cases. Among Morse`s colleagues are the somewhat envious PCS Reginald Bright (Anton Lesser) and DS Peter Jakes (Jack Laskey), and his superior officer, veteran DI Fred Thursday (Roger Alarm) who shows Morse the ropes of police work.
Critical reception and chances of renewal
The series reception has been universally positive, and the ratings very high and steady, so the renewal decisions must have been rather easy to make. In fact, the pilot was not originally planned as a series pilot, but was, rather, a one-off special in celebration of Inspector Morse`s 25 years on screen. It turned out extremely popular, with over 8 million viewers tuning in to watch, and a full series was subsequently commissioned. The first two episodes of the current series averaged approximately 5 million viewers, which also seems to warrant a continuation in the future.
Season 3 recap
The four-episode 3rd series of British drama Endeavor has wrapped up on Channel 5 on July 10, 2016. In the series finale Morse finally completes his Sergeant`s exam, Joan Thursday moves away from Oxford following an armed robbery at the bank where she works, ignoring Morse`s encouragement to stay. The robbery traps Morse at the bank along with other hostages, and as he is still held there, he realizes that this is all a plan to conceal a different crime. The cliffhanger remains unresolved, and nothing will become clarified until 2017, when the fourth series of Endeavor is scheduled for release. The third installment has bettered the previous chapter`s viewership ratings, with a 6.75 million average per episode, which is much closer to the first series` top-notch ratings. The shooting of the upcoming fourth series has begun in late spring of 2016, and is set to bring back several Morse characters and cameo appearances by actors from the original series.

The series is set to begin production in late 2016, and will return next year. The 6 million viewers average of the third season is certainly impressive enough to warrant a renewal of this acclaimed series. The plot is set in the 1960s, giving the series enough scope to last many more seasons before it finally catches up to the times of Inspector Morse.
