Basic info and storyline
Veep is a satirical political comedy show that stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a fictional Vice President, and subsequent President, of the United States. Created by Armando Iannucci, the show has been a critically acclaimed audience favorite since its debut on HBO on April 22, 2012. Following four successful seasons, HBO renewed Veep for season 5, which premiered on April 24, 2016.
Veep is loosely based on a U.K. TV series called The Thick of It, which is set in a fictional department of the British government. The pilot episode of the spinoff show was made for American audiences and featured the life of a newly elected Congressman, played by John Higgins. The originally titled show was pitched to ABC in 2007, the network decided not to include it in its Fall lineup. HBO expressed interest in adapting the show and convinced Iannucci to be involved in re-writing and completely reshooting a new pilot episode for what eventually became know as Veep.
Critical reception and renewal information
Having swept up numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, two Critics’ Choice TV Awards and the respected Screen Actors Guild Award, Veep is well poised for a fifth season set to air this Spring. Scoring a whopping 100% approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and boasting an average 90 out of 100 on Metacritic, the show continues to deliver hilarious and brilliantly written episodes. The fifth season premiered to just over a million viewers and a 0.52 demo rating, with the second episode following very closely in its footsteps, losing very little ground. Just prior to the fifth season premiere HBO actually renewed Veep for a sixth chapter.
Season 5 recap
The very popular Emmy award-winning political satire series Veep has concluded its 10-episode fifth season on June 26, 2016. The series ended on a high note ratings-wise, with 1.15 million viewers tuning in, and a 0.5 demo rating. The viewership is the season high, and higher than any Veep episode has scored since season 2. The events take an unexpected turn in the season finale when Seline finds herself completely out of the office – no longer President, she fails to secure either a vice-presidency or a Secretary of State position, is deeply confused as to her future. Laura Montez is the new president, sidelining Tom James on the way. Jonah is diagnosed with testicular cancer. Not surprisingly, Veep has been renewed for a sixth season prior to the fifth season premiere. The series` writers are just starting on the next season`s storylines, according to EP David Mandel, so while there are no plot teasers yet, we can be sure that it`s going to be as full of scheming, intrigue, tension, and hilarious dialogues.
