Series info and plot

Father Brown is a British period drama / detective television series airing on BBC One. Father Brown`s character is based on an eponymous character from G.K.Chesterton`s stories, but the storylines are primarily original and written specifically for the series. The series is developed by Rachel Flowerday and Tahsin Guner, executive produced by Will Trotter and John Yorke and produced by BBC Productions.

Father Brown (Mark Williams) is a mild-mannered priest with a razor-sharp mind who investigates crimes and saves souls. The exasperated local police Inspector Valentine (Hugo Speer) often takes the investigation in the wrong direction, and could not have done his job without the priest`s insights. Sometimes Valentine is frustrated with Father Brown`s moral choices, as the latter serves what he perceives as justice, and not the letter of the law. He loves people and understands them, which helps him have a more humanistic approach than a police inspector can afford to have. Herein, however, lies his charm for the audience. Father Brown is set in the 1950s in the British countryside, while the original Chesterton stories took place in the 1910s London.

Reviews and possible renewal

The series is a well-loved one, with a classic plot structure, but some witty twists nonetheless. The bucolic setting and the charming characters of Father Brown make it perfect for plain old fun and relaxed viewing. A 7.4 on IMDb and an over 2.5 million viewer average – seems like a renewal should be in place for this popular series.
