Series info and concept

Lip Sync Battle is an American musical competition reality television series broadcast on Spike network since April 2, 2015. The series is produced by Eight Million Plus Productions and Matador Content, and presented by actor and rapper LL Cool J and model Chrissy Teigen. The second season premiered in 2016 and just two episodes in its success was so apparent that the show was renewed for a 20-episode third season, which debuted on October 12, 2016.

The series` idea stems from the recurring segment on Late Night with Jimmy Falon that was introduced by John Krasinski. The bit consisted of celebrities battling each other in lip syncing, and is still used in the Late Night show. Lip Sync Battle fully involves the in-house audience, as the winner is chosen by the viewers present at the filming of the show. Between the second and third seasons the legends of Lip Sync Battle faced off in the Lip Sync Battle: All-Stars LIVE one-hour special, featuring familiar faces, such as Olivia Munn, John Legend, Terry Crews and many more of the audience favorites.

Series background and renewal prospects

The series` idea was pitched to several major networks before landing on Spike, but NBC, USA and Bravo have all passed on the concept, as it didn`t seem strong enough to stand on its own. Spike, however, saw the potential and picked up on the idea, which proved a major success for the network. The series premiere in 2015 was the highest-rated non-scripted debut ever for the channel with 2.2 million viewers tuning in, and a 1.3 rating in the important 18-49 demographic. The show has earned an Emmy nomination, and seemed to have had a great future ahead, however, the viewership ratings took a hit in the current chapter. Season 3 premiered to 0.858 million viewers and a 0.38 rating in the 18-49 demo. Three episodes in the ratings plummeted to 0.503 million viewers and 0.24 in the demo, and the future of the show is not immediately clear at this time, although there are many fans still tuning in.
