Show concept and controversy
Friday Night Tykes is a controversial reality television series airing on Esquire Network since 2014. The current third season premiered on January 19, 2016. The series is produced by 441 Productions, Electro-Fish Media and Texas Crew Productions, and executive produced by David Carabinas, Jason Sciavicco, Eric Salat, Matt Maranz and Michael John Warren. This season is set to contain 10 episodes.
The series portrays Texan junior American football teams, with 8 to 11-year old players. The training methods used by the coaches and the parents are, judging by most of the reviews, extremely harsh bordering on unacceptably abusive. Esquire Network agrees that “the show brings up important and serious questions about parenting and safety in youth sports”, whereas a lot of viewers and television critics are angered by this “authentic and provocative glimpse”. Even the USA Football spokesman Steve Alic has noted in an elliptical press release that more attention should be paid to safety and parental control by the coaches featured in Friday NIght Tykes.
Current season and chances of renewal
The series has been immensely successful for Esquire Network, and the issues it raises are surely a part of its appeal to the viewers. Just how far are parents and coaches willing to push their kids and how much is just too much? The second season saw an improvement in safety, and Charles Chavarrio, the Broncos` coach was even suspended for his overly forceful approach.
Friday Night Tykes has a rather unimpressive 6.1/10 rating on IMDb, but it seems to be a likely candidate for renewal in light of its controversial and engaging subject matter and the many fans that the show does have.
