Series info, plot and cast

A veteran British criminal and mystery drama TV series, Midsomer Murders is back on screen with the six-episode 18th series. The current series premiered on ITV on January 19, 2016, while the show has been on the air since 1997. It is based on Chief Inspector Barnaby, a book series by Caroline Graham, produced by Bentley Productions and executive produced by Jo Wright since series 15.

Midsomer Murders is set in rural modern-day England and revolves around DCI Barnaby`s investigations of the murders that take place regularly in picturesque English countryside. In fact, much of the series` success stems from the dissonance between the pastoral landscapes and lifestyle and the outbursts of violence that take place in this unlikely setting. The series starred John Nettles as DCI Tom Barnaby for thirteen series, and following his retirement in 2010, he was replaced by Neil Dudgeon as the new lead character DCI John Barnaby, Tom`s cousin.

Current season, ratings and possible renewal

The series has a steady following and boasts consistently high viewership ratings. The current series opened to an audience of 6.63 million viewers, but lost over a million by the third episode. The overall decrease from the early series` averages of 9 million viewers is certainly natural for a show that`s been on the air for this long a time, as it`s bound to be losing some of its audience to newer programs. Whether there`s enough steam in Midsomer Murders to stay on screen for much longer remains to be seen, but the ratings still seem strong enough to warrant a further renewal.
