Series` background and production info

An American fantasy television series, The Magicians is based on the eponymous novel by Lev Grossman. The series debuted with a special preview on SyFy and Showcase on December 16, 2015, and the rest of the series premiered on January 25, 2016 in its regular time slot. It`s the result of collaboration by McNamara Moving Company, Man Sewing Dinosaur, Groundswell Productions and Universal Cable Productions. The Magicians is created by Sera Gamble and John McNamara.

Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) begins his studies of magic at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy and realizes just how real and how dangerous to humankind magic is. His lifelong friend Julia Wicker (Stella Maeve), however, is not admitted to Brakebills, and joins a secret magical society.

Reviews and early renewal

An American version of Harry Potter for adults, The Magicians premiered to 1.113 million viewers and a 0.41 rating in the 18-49 demo, with the number dropping significantly to 745,000 and a 0.28 rating by the third episode. Some critics aren`t happy with the oversimplified adaptation of the book, some – with the unsympathetic Julia, still others – with the incoherent plot. However, there has been much praise as well – for example of the fact that the series adds the magical air to the mundane in a very subtle, non-stereotypical manner that is both gritty and surreal. Apparently the series has found enough of a fan following, and was renewed for a second season just four episodes into its freshman season, Sy Fy announced on February 8, 2016.
