Summary and plot
The Night Shift is a medical drama TV series that follows the lives of staff who work the late night shift in the San Antonio Medical Center emergency room. Created by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the series debuted on NBC on May 27, 2014, with season three premiering on June 1, 2016.
Dr. TC Callahan (Eoin Macken) as an ex-army medic who now works as a surgeon at the San Antonio Medical Center. His frequent quarrels with his ex-girlfriend and newly appointed night shift manager, Dr. Jordan Alexander (Jill Flint) are at the heart of the storyline. Other characters include Dr. Topher Zia (Ken Leung), a private-sector surgeon who spent a lot of time on the battlefield, hospital administrator Dr. Michael Ragosa (Freddy Rodriguez), Dr. Drew Alister (Brendan Fehr), a gay army medic who is still active in the reserves, Dr. Krista Bell-Hart (Jeananne Goossen) a young resident trying to work her way up the ranks, Dr. Paul Cummings (Robert Bailey Jr.) who works hard to emerge from his father’s shadow, and Dr. Scott Clemmens (Scott Wolfe) Chief of Surgery.
Ratings, reviews and renewal potential
The Night Shift has received mixed reviews since its premiere two seasons ago. With just 20% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, and 45 out of 100 on Metacritic, not everyone is in love with the series. However, viewership numbers are what really matters when it comes to renewing a show, which drew in nearly 8 million for the first season premiere and just north of 5.5 million for season two. The third season of NBC`s medical drama series The Night Shift has ended with an explosive season finale on August 31, 2016. By the end of the episode Scott confronts Annie about her drug addiction, both TC and Syd may possibly be dead, Kenny has serious problems with debts he can`t repay, Drew and Rick face a custody scare, and most of the ER staff is in transition. 5.43 million viewers tuned in to see the last episode, while the season premiere attracted an audience of 4.81 million viewers. The show`s viewership peaked at 6.28 million in midseason, and reached an average of 5 million viewers per episode and a 1.0 demo rating, outperforming two of the summer`s top performers – Zoo and Wayward Pines.
