Storyline and plot
Based on the novel by Susanna Clarke of the same name, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is a British historical fantasy television series that is set in England of the Napoleonic era. Written by Peter Harness, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell Series 1 premiered on BBC One on May 17, 2015. In the U.S. the show premiered on BBC America on June 13, 2015.
In this series, a different type of history is presented to the audience. Here, Mr. Norell has magical powers which make statues come alive. His servant talks him into moving to London to help England fight in the Napoleonic war. While in the capital, Mr. Norrell meets a gentleman fairy, a street magician and leading members of the government, making magic a respectable way to fight against the enemy. At the same time, Jonathan Strange also meets a magician who convenes him to begin to study magic. Norrell and Strange go on their quest to return to the British Empire its well known might.
Ratings, reviews and possible renewal
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel received lots of critical acclaim and has boasted an incredible 90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and 71 out of 100 on Metacritic. This is a fresh, exciting and mesmerizing historical fantasy drama that is as interesting to children, as it is to adults. Although there hasn’t been any official news from the network on the fate of the show, its popularity definitely warrants a return. Like many fans, we hope to see a comeback of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell for series 2 in the near future.
