Series background and info

A Nickelodeon live-action musical sitcom series School of Rock originally premiered in March 2016, and the second season quickly followed, debuting on September 17, 2016. The first season contains 12 episodes, and the second chapter consists of 13. The show is produced by Armogida Brothers Productions and Passable Entertainment, and is written and executive produced by Jim and Steve Armogida alongside Scott Rudin, Jay Kogen, Eli Bush and Richard Linklater.

The series is an adaptation of the 2003 School of Rock movie. It features a mixed bunch of overachieving students at a prestigious prep school and their substitute teacher who is concurrently an out-of-luck rock musician. At first the proper and rule-abiding students don`t think much of their new teacher, but eventually begin to express their inner feelings more and more openly and form a clandestine rock band together with him. The cast includes Breanna Yde (Tomika), Jade Pettyjohn (Summer), Ricardo Hurtado (Freddy), Lance Lim (Zack), Aidan Miner (Lawrence) and Tony Cavalero (Mr. Finn). The second season continues to blend many musical numbers into the comedy fabric and entertain its tween audience.

Viewership, current season and chances of renewal

The series premiered to 2.37 million viewers, sloping significantly to 1.68 million viewers by the second episode, but managing to retain an overall first season average of almost 2 million viewers per episode. The second season debuted to 1.34 million viewers, slipping to under a million for the third episode. The reviews are mixed, noting the primitive storyline, infantile characters that are difficult to relate to and casting that`s far from perfect. There is, however, a sweetness to the series` atmosphere, and fun performances by the newly formed band. School of Rock scored a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children’s Program, yet unfortunately, the 4.4/10 IMDb score reflects the general public`s opinion of the show. There have been no network announcements regarding the renewal or cancelation of the series, and with this type of contradictory reception the decision may go either way, so please stay tuned, and we’ll keep you informed.

UPDATED December 3, 2016: While Nickelodeon`s hit live-action series School of Rock is still in the midst of its sophomore installment, an announcement was made by the network that the show has been renewed for a third season with the season order expanded from 13 to 20. The news comes on the heels of the excellent viewership average of 1.4 million viewers per episode that the musical comedy is currently delivering.
