Production info and storyline
Marcella is a new British crime noir drama series airing on ITV since April 4, 2016. Written by Hans Rosenfeldt, created by Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder and executive produced by Rosenfeldt, Larder and Tony Wood, the series hails from Buccaneer Media. On July 1, 2016 the series will be made available to viewers outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. The freshman series of Marcella contains 8 one-hour episodes.
Marcella Backland (Anna Friel), a former homicide detective is forced to reboot her career in the London Metropolitan Police after a 7-year hiatus when her husband Jason (Nicholas Pinnock) unexpectedly leaves her with two children. Marcella throws herself into work, and finds herself investigating the serial killer in the same case that she worked on years ago, with a potential copycat killer following in his footsteps. The difficulties that she faces in readjusting to her duties and her suspicions regarding her husband`s past and present motivations are explored in depth.
Critical reception and renewal potential
The series, which comes from the creator of the cult Swedish-Danish thriller series The Bridge, has had a very successful debut with an audience of 6.3 million viewers, and slightly over 8 million viewers in L+7. Critical reviews of Marcella have been mostly positive, praising its dreamlike quality, beautiful cinematography, but also lamenting the lack of compelling hooks in the storyline. Whether or not the viewers will keep on watching Marcella throughout the present series, and whether it will be renewed for another run is still unclear. UPDATED August 27, 2016: Some exciting news that is expanding the outreach of ITV’s dark criminal thriller Marcella – the show has been renewed by ITV and also picked up by Netflix to be broadcast and streamed consecutively in 2017. The new season will contain eight 60-minute episodes and further increase Netflix’s presence in the United Kingdom. Marcella’s renewal was easily predictable due to the ratings success of the freshman chapter, so please stay tuned for release date information for the second season of the crime drama.
