Series` background and format

A hit reality program, Big Brother UK is a part of a hugely popular international franchise that has originated in 2000 and stems from a television series in Netherlands created by John de Mol. In the course of its long run it has aired on Channel 4, E4, and is now broadcast on Channel 5 and TV3 in Ireland. It is currently presented by Emma Willis and narrated by Marcus Bentley.

Big Brother UK features housemates – a set of cast members who are living in an isolated house, are filmed almost constantly, thus giving the audience an opportunity to follow their life as they form relationships – both friendships and romantic involvements, and basically learn to cohabit in a space with a number of different people. The current series is the first to feature two houses. A cast member is evicted each week by a public vote, and the last one standing receives a hefty cash prize.

Viewership dynamics and renewal through 2018

The viewership for Big Brother UK has declined significantly following its move to Channel 5, and currently constitutes between 1.8 and 1.3 million viewers per episode. It has spawned spinoffs and specials, most notably Celebrity Big Brother. There has been much criticism of the show format, but apparently it enjoys enough audience support for the critics` opinions to be overlooked. In March 2015 an announcement was made that the series will stay on the air at least until 2018, which means that there are at least two more series in the future of Big Brother UK. Please stay tuned, and we will be sure to inform you of the release dates.
