Series information

One of the truTV unscripted original comedies that debuted this winter, Almost Genius is a satirical take on the widespread viral video fade. It is produced by Meetinghouse Productions and Zone 3, and premiered on December 29, 2015. The program is inspired by the World`s Dumbest, another truTV original that went off the air in 2014 after a successful 6-year run.

The series` co-hosts April Richardson and Chris Fairbanks present video clips that are almost viral, almost hilarious, and almost… genius, as the title suggests. The twelve half-hour episodes cover a wide range of videos that didn`t quite make it to the top. Actors and comedians are inserted into the videos digitally to ironically congratulate the participants on their runner-up status, but the truTV network claims that there is no mockery involved. Well, it actually seems that there`s nothing but mockery, and that`s what is making the audience laugh and watch more.

Ratings and chances of renewal

There isn`t much to the show besides the straightforward entertainment value of making the viewers laugh, and that`s a perfectly honest and commercially rewarding goal for a series. World`s Dumbest did its share for truTV, now that niche might be taken over by Almost Genius. If it is funny enough, and the ratings prove strong, the show will stay on and become the comedy fixture on truTV. At this point Almost Genius averages approximately 0.4 million viewers and a 0.18 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Is the series itself a runner-up or a winner?
