Martin Shaw plays George Gently, a Chief Inspector for the fictitious North East Police Constabulary, who is trying to deal with the increasingly blurred lines between police and criminals in the 1960s. The series opens in the early 1964 when capital punishment is still in effect in Britain, and progresses through the decade in seven seasons.
