Series background
Single By 30 is a digital romantic comedy series that was launched on August 24, 2016 on YouTubeRed. it was created and directed by Wesley Chan and Philip Wang, written by Tiffany Lo, Chris Dinh and Todd Waldman, and executive produced by Chan, Wang, Waldman, Kathleen Grace, Jason Newman, Kendall Rhodes and Melissa Schneider. The first season contains 8 episodes and hails from New Form Digital and Wong Fu Productions.
The series stars Harry Shum Jr. of Glee (Peter) and Kina Grannis, a YouTube musician (Joanna) as two high school best friends who have promised to marry each other if they remain single at the age of 30. The pair has not been in touch for 13 years, and the promise made long ago requires some attention. Under a tight deadline the duo works to set each other up with someone else in order not to have to go through with fulfilling their promise to each other.
Reception and possibilities of renewal
YouTube Red, the paid subscription streaming service launched in the end of 2014, is foraying into a number of genres with its original series, films and documentaries, from horror (Scare PewDiePie) to comedy (Prank Academy, Bad Internet), all of them launched in 2016. They are garnering increasingly positive reviews and gaining popularity.
