Italian drama series – storyline and info

Gomorrah is a 2014 Italian criminal drama series based on an eponymous book by Roberto Saviano. Two seasons of the series have aired in Italy in Sky Italia, where it became an instant hit, and it has recently been renewed by the network for two more seasons on the heels of its popularity. Season 1 debuted on Sundance TV in the United States on August 24, 2016.

Set in Naples, the capital of Italian organized crime, the series focuses on both internal and external power struggles within the Savastano clan, a Camorra organization under the patronage of Don Pietro Savostano. Later on in the series, following his arrest, his wife Imma takes over and the show explores the hierarchy within the structure, portraying all levels from street crime to the highest positions of power.

Viewership and renewal

The series premiered at 0.126 million viewers, with a 0.03 demo rating, and declined to 0.99 million viewers and 0.02 Compared to the 1.2 million fans at series premiere in Italy, where Gomorrah became the network`s most watched series ever, this is a surprisingly modest result, but Sundance TV`s outreach is incomparably smaller than Sky Italia`s. Additionally, considering Gomorrah`s subject matter, it is clear that its resonance in its native Italy was naturally the strongest. The gritty and realistic series has strong review aggregator scores – 76% on Metacritic and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Since there is a second season already waiting to air, and two more in the works, all fans have to worry about is whether Sundance TV continues to air Gomorrah beyond season 2. Stay tuned, and we will let you know when any news becomes available.

Season 1 recap

The action-packed first season of compelling mafia-themed series Gomorrah has wrapped up on September 28, 2016 on Skydance. The end of the season leaves Don Pietro escaping from the police van while being relocated to a different prison, ambushed by the surviving members of his clan. The last scene featured Genny on the verge of death, yet showing signs of life, so we are expecting his return in the near future. The season finale aired to 70,000 viewers and a 0.01 demo rating, a significant decline from the premiere ratings, and a small fraction of the explosive ratings that it enjoys in its native Italy, but considering the fact that Skydance is not a major network, this is not a surprise. The show’s been garnering excellent reviews, and the fans are eagerly awaiting the next season. The raw, naturalistic show is a major international hit sold to over 130 countries, and will continue airing its second installment on the same US network to the delight of its fans.
