Basic info and series concept
Naked and Afraid is a hit American survival reality series with a twist, on the air since June 23, 2013 on the Discovery Channel. The program is produced by Renegade 83 Entertainment, and executive produced by David Garfinkle, Jay Rentroe, Steve Rankin, Denise Contin and Joseph Boyle. The current fifth season premiered on March 13, 2016. Two follow-ups of Naked and Afraid were also launched – Naked Confessions and Naked and Afraid XL, which premiered on July 12, 2015.
The series follows pairs of survivalists testing their limits in isolated remote locations, under extreme weather conditions for 21 days. The participants are always naked, and often afraid, as they have to fight off dangerous animals, obtain food and water and manage under the elements. Each person is allowed to bring one useful object. The contestants are allowed to tap out at any time of the challenge. If they stay on, they must arrive at a designated point to be picked up. A single episode portrays the highlights of one couple`s quest.
Critical reception and renewal
The current season features 21 days of survival in brand new locations ranging from Canada to Australia, with dangerous animals and reptiles lurking nearby, exhilarating physical challenges and foraging for food, clothes and shelter. The fourth season of Naked and Afraid was extremely successful in terms of ratings, just as its previous cycles have been. It averaged over 2 million viewers per episode, with a 0.9 million rating in the 18-49 demographic. The current fifth season followed the ratings trend, opening to an audience of 2.278 million viewers and a 0.84 demo rating, and continues to average above 2 million viewers per episode. Most critics and viewers seem to believe that this reality show is actually unscripted and honestly presented, which led to the series` positive reception and popularity. The fact that Discovery was the first to strip its survival show participants might also have something to do with the viewers` interest.
