About the program
Facing is a compelling new documentary series inspired by the critical acclaim of Facing Ali and launched by National Geographic on August 30, 2016. It is produced by Network Entertainment, and executive produced by Derik Murray, Paul Getz, Michael J. Miller and Kevin Tao Morris.
The show undertakes to offer a new and sometimes unexpected perspective at some of the iconic figures of recent times – Saddam Hussein, Vladimir Putin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Suge Knight, and Pablo Escobar. Through first-person interviews with those who have come in contact with them, the hour-long episodes seek to paint portraits that may differ from the stereotypical media images of these people – or may further confirm the stereotype. Many of the interviewees are themselves rather well-known personas – such as Javier Peña, Steven Murphy and Joe Toft, the DEA agents whose work has eventually led to Escobar’s downfall, or Dr. Robert Gates, ex-US Secretary of Defense, others are less known, such as Escobar’s #1 hitman John Jairo “Popeye” Velásquez.
Ratings and renewal potential
The historical documentary debuted with a 0.16 demo rating and 0.536 million viewers, dropped to 0.472 million, and seems to have regained momentum in week three, with 0.592 million viewers tuning in. With a series of this format, viewership depends heavily on the specific public interest towards each of the central figures for a particular episode. The ratings aren’t overwhelming, but they may be strong enough to carry the docuseries into another season, so let’s wait and see what the network decides.
