Storyline and basic info

On September 1, 2016 ABC AU launched the second series of Australian political and hacker thriller The Code. The series is created and written by Shelley Birse, executive produced by Carole Sklan, David Oglivy and Greer Simpkin and produced by Playmaker Media for ABC. It originally premiered in 2014, and the second series debuted with six new one-hour episodes after a two-year hiatus.

Several storylines intertwine in the plot: one features Ned and Jessie Banks, brothers who leak a video filmed at the site of a suspicious outback auto accident and immediately threatened, and their friend Hani Parande. Another portrays teacher Alex Wisham and police officer Tim Simons delving into the case of Clarence Boyd, the accused teenager. The operations of Ned’s journalism office are at the center of the third plot line, and the fourth one focuses on the highest echelons of power in the Australian government, corruption and cover ups. The beginning of the second series finds the Banks brothers in the wake of deportation to the US due to potential security breaches.

Early season ratings, awards and renewal potential

The second series of The Code premiered to 0.422 million viewers, which is significantly below last season`s premiere numbers. Yet the series has a reputable score of 7.6/10 on IMDb. The show was nominated and won a slew of awards, including Best Television Drama Series at 2015 AACTA and Television Mini-Series Original at 2014 AWGIE Awards. The lengths to which politicians go to cover up unseemly truths are once again revealed as extreme, and the subject of whistleblowers and digital activism is explored in-depth. This idea turned out to be so universally relatable that the show was not only well-received at home, but has already been sold to BBC Four, the Audience Network in the United States, the Sundance Channel in Latin America and Denmark’s DR network.

Series 2 recap

On October 6, 2016 Australian hi-tech thriller series The Code has completed the broadcast of its 6-episode second series – too good to be so short. Some characters got their well-deserved happy endings, such as Jesse and Hani, who went on the run, but others didn’t have as much luck, such as Roth, who was shot. There is a lot of potential in the storyline for the future, and the critics apparently agree, having awarded The Code a significant number of accolades at the 4th AACTA Awards, ADG Awards, AWGIE Awards and other ceremonies. The second installment continued to deliver ratings that were just as strong as the first, and boasts a 7.6/10 IMDb score, so there seems to be a fairly good chance of yet another season being commissioned.
