About the series

New Girl is an American single-cam sitcom television series that has been on the air since September 20, 2011. It is created by Elizabeth Meriwether. The current fifth season premiered on January 5, 2016.

The comedy plot follows Jessica “Jess” Christopher Day (Zooey Deschanel), an offbeat young woman moving into a loft with three single young men Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris) after a break-up with her boyfriend. The main cast also includes Cece (Hannah Simone), Jess` best friend and Coach (Damon Wayans, Jr.), an old loftmate who moves back in right in the premiere season`s second episode and stays.

Viewer reception and possible renewal

What follows is built around a well-known scheme – the thirty-plus characters have to deal with becoming mature adults, make relationship and career choices. What makes this series stand out is the quirky and refreshing ways in which the great cast of characters deals with these issues. The constant awkwardness present in Jess`s interactions with the world is both relatable on a certain level and bizarre in its extent, and makes you want to see more of her antics.

The first season of New Girl was the most successful one in terms of viewership numbers, with 10.28 million tuning in to watch the premiere, and a whooping 8.22 million viewer average for the season. The last completed season, which wrapped up on May 5, 2015, was not as impressive, but still good, with a 3.42 million viewers per episode. New Girl has been nominated five times for the Golden Globe Awards and five times for the Primetime Emmy Awards. The series seems to have a steady enough viewer base to be picked up for renewal.

Season 5 recap

A 22-part fifth chapter of the Fox network’s award-winning sitcom New Girl concluded in the US on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 having delivered an outstanding average viewership of 2.5 million households per episode. Such impressively steady ratings and wide critical acclaim have already secured a renewal for the hit comedy series, so fans are more interested now in what surprises the producers are cooking for a new installment. Megan Fox has already confirmed her return to the show as a temporary roommate. According to rumors, there will also be a handful of cameo appearances, perhaps even from the Kardashian family.
