About the series
The first collaboration ever between Warner Bros. Animation and Disney XD, Right Now, Kapow is a unique sketch comedy animated television series that premiered on Disney XD on September 19, 2016. It is directed by Devin Flynn, and created and executive produced by Justin Becker and Marly Halpern-Graser, with Sam Register also executive producing alongside the duo. The first season contains eight 22-minute episodes.
The series contains very short skits, mainly around 30 seconds, starring six cast members – Dor, Candy, Ice Cream, Plant and Moon, with appropriately shaped heads. They sing and perform comedic sketches that are usually unrelated to each other. Right Now, Kapow takes the freedom of comedic style to a level of absurdity that may be envied. The stories are incredibly diverse and a lot of fun, although it is an acquired taste, as most viewers agree.
Current season – reception and renewal prospects
With its creators previously involved in Adult Swim projects and Cartoon Network’s Mad, the show was predictably bound for the realm of the absurd, and it is obvious that it is not everybody’s cup of tea. The series has a 5.9/10 IMDb score, and premiered to 200,000 viewers, maintaining an average between 140,000 and 200,000 viewers during the most recent episodes, and garnering rather contradictory reviews. Some criticize the series for the abundance of gross humor and the jokes that don’t work, others admire the quirky humor and diverse bits of comedy.
