Series’ concept and production info
Grand Designs is a fan-favorite British homebuilding reality series airing on Channel 4 since 1999. The program was created by Talkback Thames and Fremantle Media, is currently produced by Boundless Productions and presented by Kevin McCloud since its inception. The current seventeenth series debuted on September 21, 2016 with an episode that portrayed an amazing and unique house built 40 feet up in the air in Gloustershire woodlands.
The series’ regular format features the whole process of building a house, from the first visit to the projected site to the computer visualization, through the build and the finishing stages. There is a huge variety of styles and designs presented in the program, from sustainable architecture, converted water towers and industrial buildings to underground structures. The only thing that brings them all together is the unusual concept or construction method employed in the building process.
Popularity and prospects of renewal
The series is a veteran favorite that has spawned a number of spinoffs, including Grand Designs Indoors, Grand Designs Abroad, Grand Designs Trade Secrets, and several others. It has a very strong 8.6/10 IMDb score and has been nominated for BAFTA Awards numerous times before winning one for Production Team in 2015. It is an excellent ratings performer for Channel 4, premiering to 2.44 million viewers in the current 17th series, and retaining practically all of its audience for the second episode, which drew 2.4 million viewers.
