Series background and info
British cult sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf has aired ten completed series on BBC Two since 1988 with several long breaks. It is created and executive produced by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor with Henry Normal coming onboard in 2016, and hails from Grant Naylor and Baby Cow Productions. The most recent eleventh series was launched on September 22, 2016, and was available via UKTV Play a week before its broadcast premiere, starting September 15, 2016. The extensive and popular franchise includes a radio version, magazines, pilots for a US version, four novels and a variety of merchandise.
The two characters central to the series are the last human alive Dave Lister and a hologram of his deceased bunkmate Arnold Rimmer. They are trapped together in space on their spaceship, Red Dwarf, and are not happy with each other as teammates. Other cast members are Cat, ship computer Holly, mechanoid Krysten, and Lister’s ex-love interest Kristine Kochanski.
Critical reception and renewal for series 12
The series has been highly acclaimed, with a number of respectable accolades, including an International Emmy in the Popular Arts and a Best BBC Comedy Series award at the British Comedy Awards. Off-the-wall characters, their love/hate relationship and funny situations made it a fan favorite throughout decades, yet in the last incarnation the viewer reception hasn’t been as warm. Red Dwarf has already been renewed for a twelfth installment, which should be airing in 2017. Fans are eagerly awaiting the new series, so please stay tuned and we will bring you the release date info as soon as it becomes available.
