Series creative team

The roster of Netflix original series is getting bigger every month with new additions in almost every genre – from superhero action series and political dramas, to thoughtful documentaries and sitcoms. The streaming giant continues delighting its picky and demanding audiences with new comedy series featuring unusual and interesting plots. This time the company has presented us with a new web comedy series called Haters Back Off, starring Colleen Ballinger who has co-created the new show alongside Chris Ballinger based on her immensely popular Internet and YouTube alter ego Miranda Sings. Coleen and Chris also serve as executive producers together with Kristen Zolner, Ted Biaselli, Brian Wright and Josh Barry. Season 1 of Haters Back Off was co-produced for Netflix by Brightlight Pictures and The Firm and was made available online globally on October 14, 2016.

Plot and cast

The protagonist of the new series Haters Back Off is an ordinary young woman named Miranda Sings (played by Colleen Ballinger) who has decided to become a real superstar on YouTube. At a first glance, it seems that the girl is a little naive and very mediocre and clearly lacks talent, but she still manages to attract nearly six million subscribers to her channel. She also believes that she can become a great singer, although she more often than not fails in that regard exposing herself to online critique and ridicule. Haters keep bombarding Miranda with negative comments. On one hand, she takes hateful comments close to heart, but on the other the narcissistic girl still seems to be having a strong case of star fever. The new comedy series also stars Angela Kinsey, Erik Stocklin, Francesca Reale and Steve Little.

Viewers’ feedback and series prospects

Season 1 of Haters Back Off was released online to Netflix subscribers around the globe on Friday, October 14, 2016 in its entirety – 8 thirty-minute episodes. The new oddball comedy series exposes the realities of the modern world, where any individual, no matter how talentless, mediocre or lacking self-awareness, gets a shot at becoming famous using various internet outlets, like YouTube, for example. Miranda Sings embodies the image of mediocre, but extremely ambitious and arrogant singer, who will stop at nothing to become famous. The plot of the series focuses on her desperate attempts to fulfil her dream, while giving a glimpse of the lives of her family members and friends. So far, the feedback from viewers is somewhat mixed, although mostly positive. The series holds a 6.6 out of 10 IMDb score and most likely will get enough traction to secure a renewal.
