Series info and storyline
Damned is a new British dramedy series broadcast on Channel 4 since September 27, 2016 after the pilot premiered on June 12, 2016. Created and written by Jo Brand (BBC Four’s Getting On) and Morwenna Banks, with Will Smith co-writing, the show hails from What Larks Productions. The first series contains six half-hour episodes.
The show is set inside the Social Services’ Children’s Services department, with social workers at the center of the narrative. Brand and Banks star in the series along with a set of familiar faces – Alan Davies, Kevin Eldon, Isy Suttie, Himesh Patel, Aisling Bea and Nick Hancock. The social workers’ heavy case loads and complicated personal lives offer a 3-D portrayal of a profession not often seen on television in a light-hearted and entertaining manner.
Reception and renewal prospects
The comedy series is filmed in a vérité style, nailing down the mundane, and the austere and plain office space is a perfect background for the snappy dialogue and the quirky jokes. Damned premiered to an audience of 1.14 million viewers, and was warmly received, with the characters getting more grounded and the script becoming more dynamic as the freshman series progresses. Jo Brand’s mother was a social worker, so there is definitely vividness and authenticity stemming from that. There seems to be a very good chance of another series being commissioned, and hopefully, the show will develop into something even more brilliant, so please stay tuned for further information.
