Storyline and production info
On September 30, 2016 a new British police procedural The Level premiered on ITV. The series is written by Gaby Chiappe (Vera, Shetland) and Alexander Perrin (Shetland, Leonardo), executive produced by Polly Leys and Kate Norrish and produced by Hillbilly Television. The freshman installment contains six one-hour episodes.
Career-driven and independent, Detective Sergeant Nancy Devlin (Karla Chrome) is drawn back to the East Sussex coast where she grew up by a strange turn of events. Career criminal and hauling company owner Frank Le Saux (Philip Glenister), who was once close to her in a father figure sort of way, is killed. She takes a bullet in the same shoot-out, and is subsequently summoned to join in the investigation of this very crime. She eventually goes undercover on a dangerous mission to figure out the complicated situation. Amanda Burton stars as Cherie Le Saux, Frank’s wife, Laura Haddock plays Hayley, Nancy’s friend and the daughter of Frank and Cherie, Gary Lewis is Nancy’s dad Gil, and Joe Absolom is Shay Nash, Hayley’s ex-boyfriend.
Viewership and chances of renewal
The Level provided a sunnier version of the British noir procedural, which has emerged as a distinct and very popular genre. Not without gruesomeness, yet lighter than many similar shows, it premiered to 4.32 million viewers and dropped to 3.64 million viewers in the subsequent week. The fast-paced, intense show has a 6.6/10 score on IMDb, and there may very well be a second series of The Level in the future. Stay tuned for the latest news.
