Series background and format

A veteran reality comedy series that has become a true staple of American television, America’s Funniest Home Videos has been on the air since 1990, and has launched its 27th season on ABC on October 2, 2016. Created by Vin Di Bona, executive produced by Di Bona and Michelle Nasraway, and originally based on a Japanese program titled Fun TV with Kato-chan and Ken-chan, the show hails from Disney-ABC Domestic Television. Jess Harnell has been the narrator since 1998 and Alfonso Ribeiro took over as the presenter in 2015.

The show’s format is very straightforward and well-known, wherein contestants send in their home videos (which can be done online since 2012), they go through a rigorous selection process and are subsequently featured in AFHV. Most of the video clips do not last more than 30 seconds, and can usually be placed in one of the following categories: humorous accidents involving people or animals, unusual talent displays and practical jokes, although there is always something unexpected that’s difficult to categorize. The people who send in their videos compete for a cash prize.

Viewer reception and chances of renewal

Two similar projects, America’s Funniest People and World’s Funniest Videos, created by Di Bona aired in the 1990s, but lacked the fan support of America’s Funniest Home Videos and were discontinued. The show has been a solid fan favorite for decades, and is a perfect source of easy laughs, while the next to null production cost and universal appeal make it a perfect investment for the network. The 6.2/10 IMDb score denotes relatively positive reception, and the current season premiered to an audience of 4.7 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demo. There’s definitely more of this simple, fun-for-the-whole-family series coming in the future, so please stay tuned for announcements.
