Production info and storyline
Westworld is a new HBO science fiction drama/thriller series that premiered on October 2, 2016 after several delays. It is created and executive produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with Bryan Burk, Jerry Weintraub and J.J. Abrams also exec producing. Produced by Killer Films, Bad Robot Productions, Jerry Weintraub Productions and Warner Bros Television, the series is based on the eponymous 1973 film directed by Michael Crighton.
The show is set in a fictional futuristic Wester-themed amusement park populated by “hosts”, technologically advanced androids indiscernible from humans. This is the place where the wealthy patrons, “guests,” have an opportunity to live out their wildest fantasies, with no repercussions for the guests regardless of how illicit it may be in the real world. The all-star cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Ben Barnes, Clifton Collins Jr., among others.
Top-notch ratings and prospects of renewal
Westworld’s debut is the highest-rated HBO premiere since True Detective was launched in 2014. It has received universal critical acclaim since the outset, earning top-notch review aggregator scores – 9.2/10 on IMDb and 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series premiere attracted 1.96 million viewers, and the subsequent episodes continue to draw a consistently large audience. The show is truly compelling, with well-developed characters and an intriguing premise. It challenges the audience with provocative questions about the nature of consciousness, yet keeps the viewers on their feet. UPDATED November 16, 2016: It was only a matter of time before HBO`s hit sci-fi Western-themed show Westworld would be greenlit for season 2, and indeed, the renewal announcement was just made, commissioning 10 new episodes. The series` amazing first season totaled 11.4 million cross-platform viewers per episode, which is more than Game of Thrones first season brought in in its freshman run. Considering the elaborate work that the production of the next installment will require, it is most likely that Westworld season 2 will be broadcast in late 2017 or early 2018.
