About the series
On October 3, 2016 Channel 4 launched a second attempt at adapting the hit Australian reality cooking competition format My Kitchen Rules, which has consistently held the top spot on the ratings charts down under. The first time around the show was adapted in Great Britain by Sky Living in 2014 and was broadcast for just one series, and now My Kitchen Rules UK debuted on Channel 4. The first chapter contains thirty 60-minute episodes. It is produced by Birmingham-based 7 Wonder Productions, executive produced by Eve Kay and hosted by Steve Jones.
16 pairs of amateur cooks set out to prove that their skills are on par with restaurant standards by creating thematic pop up restaurants right in their houses. They compete for a £10,000 prize, and one of the UK’s most acclaimed chefs, and two-time Michelin Star winner Michael Caines along with renowned cook and culinary author Prue Leith act as the judges on the show.
Reception and renewal prospects
The current series concentrates on Scottish foodies and their culinary exploits, and has already featured a wide variety of unique dishes – from a Scottish-Caribbean fusion menu to Jane Austen-inspired dishes and spicy Bollywood courses. The critics mostly find the show unremarkable, and the viewership ratings only confirm the lukewarm reviews. My Kitchen Rules UK seems to lack that special ingredient that hooks the viewers and distinguishes it from similarly themed shows. Stay tuned and be among the first to find out whether Channel 4 plans to renew the show for another series.
