Production info, plot and cast
One of the most highly anticipated fall 2016 launches, Timeless is a science fiction action drama that debuted on NBC on October 3, 2016. Created and executive produced by Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan with John Davis, John Fox, Marney Hochman and Neil Marshall also on the executive producing team, the series is the result of a collaborative effort by MiddKid Productions, Kripke Enterprises, Davis Entertainment, Universal Television and Sony Pictures Television.
Ex-NSA asset turned space-traveling criminal Garcia Flynn (Goran Višjnić) disappears after stealing an experimental time-traveling machine and supposedly killing his wife and child. There is an unlikely team going after him in time – history professor Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer), soldier Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter) and engineer Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett), who is the inventor of the machine. They realize that Flynn’s plans may change their own times completely, and each of the three has a certain role in his intricate evil plan.
Viewership and prospects for the future
The season premiere drew 7.6 million viewers, a share of 7 and a 1.8 demo rating, but by the fourth episode only 5.47 million were tuning in. Timeless is garnering mostly positive ratings on the review aggregator websites, with a 7.5/10 IMDb score and an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, many viewers and critics agree that the opportunity offered by the curious premise has been largely wasted. The script is rushed and loose, social commentary is excessive, and while part of the audience finds the show satisfying, the majority is still waiting for it to unfold and realize its full potential.
